Friday night, more than 1,000 people gathered in Dayton for an event organized by The Bulwark in solidarity with our community.
One of the most moving moments came from Springfield native John Legend, who recorded a special message.
John speaks about the Springfield he knows and loves—and about the Haitian neighbors, classmates, coworkers, caregivers, and friends who have become part of this community.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to John Legend and to everyone at The Bulwark for standing with our community in such an extraordinary way.
And I want to say something equally important to you.
The solidarity we felt Friday night is the same solidarity you have shown during these frightening weeks of ICE arrests, detentions, and families suddenly separated from loved ones.
Your generosity has helped our small team answer the calls, respond to urgent needs, and remind frightened families that they are not facing this moment alone.
John ends his message by pointing toward a more humane way forward. Every act of compassion and solidarity you have shown our community is part of that way forward.
From our team at the Haitian Center, and on behalf of my sisters and brothers here in Springfield, thank you for standing with us.
With gratitude,
Viles
